Hailstones, depending on the size and speed, can cause serious harm to both sloped and flat/low slope roofing systems. After serious weather events, always have your roof professionally inspected. Once it's safe to go outside, give your home a physical check while waiting for your contractor.
If you believe hail has damaged your roof, here's what you should do.
Check Your Gutters
Shingles have granules that protect them against the sun and outdoor elements. During a hailstorm, these sediments can fall off and end up on the ground or in your gutters. Once significant granule loss occurs, shingles will be left exposed to the damaging effects of ultraviolet (UV) rays and can deteriorate early. You don't necessarily need a ladder to inspect your gutters. If you have a selfie stick, you can put your phone on it to see if there are buildups in your gutters.
Contact a Professional Roofer
Be careful of the companies you hire after a weather event because it's when storm chasers are prevalent. Choose a local contractor for roof repairs to ensure your roof and the rest of your home are in good hands. Before hiring a roofer, ask to see proof of license and insurance, run background checks, read reviews, and ask for references.
Speak to Your Insurance Provider
Depending on how severe the roof damage is, filing a claim might be necessary. If it is, read your policy thoroughly, taking note of its inclusions and exclusions. Capture photos of the damage your roofer found because you can use them to support your claim. Don't hesitate to ask for a claim reassessment if you believe your adjuster's offer isn't enough to cover the roof damage.
