The vent is not the most notable part of a roofing system, but this doesn’t make it any less important. This component, in fact, is not only tied to roof longevity and performance, but to your home’s thermal comfort and efficiency as well. But selecting the right roof vent can be somewhat daunting given how many options there are. Here are the factors you should consider.
- Think about an active roof vent. Most roof vents belong to two categories: active and passive. Active roof vents allow for a more consistent airflow throughout the roofing system. But they operate via electricity or solar energy, so when either power sources are unavailable, they generally don’t work. Active roof vents also operate best when the roof is completely sealed. If it isn’t, there’s a chance that the vent will suck conditioned air outside your home.
- Go for a passive roof vent. The passive vent offers a traditional approach to roof ventilation. It doesn’t rely on any power sources, but instead uses natural air movement to keep your roof dry and cool. But compared to its active counterpart, the passive roof vent generally takes longer to install, and multiple ones may have to be placed along the roof ridge to provide better results. On the other hand, it’s less conspicuous than an active vent because it seamlessly blends in with the shingles on the ridges. The fact that it doesn’t need electricity or sunlight to run is also handy.
- Check out roof turbine vents. Also called a roof exhaust fan, this option uses large rotating blades to quickly and effectively remove warm and moisture-laden air from under your roof. Roof turbine vents, unfortunately, aren’t applicable for all roof types. Plus, they can detract from the sleek and neat appearance of your roof because of their size and the way they stick out.
