During the warmer months, one of the leading problems that residential roof installation and repair experts have to deal with isn’t shingles, gutters or siding. In fact, it has a lot more to do with poor attic ventilation. A poorly ventilated attic cannot contain the two main sources of indoor discomfort: heat and moisture. With poor ventilation, daily activities like showering, cooking, doing the laundry and washing the dishes will let moisture accumulate in the attic.
Here are the major problems attributed to poor attic ventilation.
- Short roof lifespan: Having too much heat and moisture can cause your roof decking to rot. In turn, this shortens the lifespan of your shingles and underlayment. Be on the lookout for cracked shingles or loose granules as a sign of insufficient roof ventilation.
- Mold and mildew growth: A humid environment is all that mold and mildew needs to to multiply. A damp and warm attic is the perfect place for them to do so. Other than damaging your attic, it can also cause respiratory complications and allergic reactions.
- Rust: When moisture is present, this encourages rust to accumulate faster on structural components like nails and fasteners. As time goes on, this can cause their rigidity to fail and cause other components like the vents and plumbing straps to fail.
